Pre-exchange 1
In preparation for our first exchange, we carried out a number of events in school to enhance the project. These included extra science lessons where students were dissecting sheep hearts that they would then report on when they visited Italy. The students also did a number of activities on sale exploration using microscopes in order that they were better prepared for their visit. They also completed a number of science lab health and safety lessons. Students were also required to study the Theremin and to brush up on their coding skills in computing that they had learned in earlier years. We had regular meetings with the students, advising them on everything that they could expect from the trip and the jobs that they should be doing and what was required of them etc. The students were also required to provide a report on various aspects of their own studying for the project which included Da Vinci’s golden ratio heart dissection and other aspects of the scientific research. The students were also required to make contact with their Italian partners and they did this very well through a WhatsApp group. Details of the exchange were shared with local press and also on regular Twitter tweets using both the school Twitter account and staff Twitter accounts. We also hosted a parental information evening where the parents and carers were invited into school to see a presentation about the exchange and also given the opportunity to ask any questions that they may have regarding it. This was seen as a very successful evening and the students and their parents/carers very much enjoyed it. The students were also given a basic Italian phrase book that was created by our languages department especially for them for this exchange.
