IIS Galileo Galilei
The IIS Galileo Galilei has 800 students and 100 teachers. The school is situated in Jesi (AN) a town of 40,000 inhabitants, but at the school there are students from all the area that includes near 100,000 people. There are students coming from a low-medium social level that are at risk of social exclusion and migrants mainly coming from Africa. The main courses that the school offers are: Biotechnology and Social-Economic. It is both a technical school and a secondary school with an emphasis on humanities. The students attending the Biotechnology course are those who are particularly interested in environment, health and scientific knowledge in general. The subjects that characterize this course are Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, English as well as IT and Graphics. A great importance is given to the experimental scientific research and well equipped laboratories are constantly used by the students, where they can find the most advanced instruments. For the students whose interests are directed towards classical and social studies, the Social-Economic course is the right one. Sociology, Psychology, Philosophy, Social Legislation, English, Spanish, Maths are the main subjects of this course. Moreover the students have a lot of possibilities in order to strengthen their linguistic competence: a mother tongue teacher twice a month, a multimedia lab, CLIL courses, afternoon courses to get PET and FIRST certificates, taking part in European projects (Comenius and Leonardo da Vinci) and e-twinning. During the fourth year, the students carry out a three-week training period that enables the integration between school (education) and the world of work. Some students can do their training in a foreign country under PON and Erasmus plus KA1 projects. Since 1996 the school is involved in European Projects, in some of them as partner in others as coordinator. In this Erasmus plus partnership the role of IIS Galileo Galilei is to be a partner taken part in all the steps of the project, developing the project, monitoring, evaluating, dissemination of results, taking part at the mobilities, etc. The school is interested always in motivate students in STEM subjects and in enhance their competences in foreign languages. This project will help teachers and students to enhance the learning/teaching process in STEM and foreign languages. The local coordinator, Prof. Paola Montesi has a big experience in European projects. She has been involved in Comenius, Leonardo da Vinci and Erasmus plus projects since year 2000. The IIS Galileo Galilei haswon with one of its projects the European Label for Languages. At school there are Chemistry, Biology and Technology Teachers with knowledge and competences to develop the project in the proper way to achieve the expected results and with a big impact in participants, schools, local and regional level. Furthermore, at European level in collaboration with the coordinator of this project.
